James Suarez at Memorial Sloan-Kettering preparing for Bone Marrow collection for his sister and 2015 'Lax Out Cancer' recipient, Kaitlyn Suarez
Kaitlyn Suarez | In May of 2008, at the age of 15, Kaitlyn was diagnosed with Stage 2A Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Kaitlyn agreed to become part of a study at her treating facility, Stony Brook University Hospital, Oncology Center, in order to be able to help others with her disease. Unfortunately, the three rounds of chemotherapy were not enough to beat her condition. In October of 2008, Kaitlyn had a reoccurrence and needed to start chemotherapy again followed by radiation treatments. Kaitlyn’s was in full remission for two years, but in November 2010 cancer returned. With ever impressive determination and perseverance Kaitlyn is currently waging another battle with cancer. She had a bone-marrow transplant in March 2011, and her doctors are very confident about her future. From the start of her life adventure, Kaitlyn has taken on a positive attitude. She was instrumental in raising funds to make a Teen Room at Stony Brook Hospital where she was treated and in a fund raising event for a 15 year old boy with Leukemia, that she met during treatment. Kaitlyn has high hopes of medical advancements for the fight against cancer. Kaitlyn is well aware that the success of her treatment is from those that have fought before her and it is her life long ambition to be part of the future successes. Just this month Kaitlyn's brother, James gave Bone Marrow at Memorial Sloan Kettering for planned transplant to Kaitlyn sometime in April 2015 Harrison McClelland | Harrison was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, which is a malignant brain tumor. Harrison had surgery to remove the tumor and underwent eight months of intense chemotherapy at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Harrison's diagnosis and road to remission was marked by many challenges and through everything Harrison continued to smile as he fought to keep up with his two older brother's, Dylan and Jackson Harrison has been in remission 15 months and he currently undergoes brain and spine scans every three months. Through this experience our family has learned the power of love, family, friends and that cancer could not break our Hero's spirit. Today Harrison is a typical little boy who loves superheroes, swimming and arts & crafts. Zachary Cote | Zachary is five years old and lives in Sound Beach. He would be in kindergarten in the Miller Place School District, but is unable to begin schooling due to the fact that he is undergoing cancer treatments. Zachary travels approximately three times per week to Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park for treatment. Zachary was diagnosed on June 4, 2014 with stage 4 brain cancer. He has undergone 42 rounds of head and spine radiation. He is currently in the 4th round, out of 9 cycles of treatments to undergo. Zachary is an only child. He loves firemen, policemen, pilots and teenage mutant ninja turtles! He spends a lot of his time building with legos and is very good at it. He enjoys playing hockey and will be starting T-Ball this year. Zachary’s mom said that he is an “old soul” who simply enjoys spending time with his cousins and building legos with his dad. Mrs. Cote said Zachary is a real trooper…and a little fighter. Zachary is very excited to be one of our Honored Guests for Lax out Cancer this year! He wants to walk out onto the field, side by side, with our Miller Place and SWR lacrosse teams. Zachary’s doctors have rearranged his treatment schedule to help make this possible! Sean Hughes | Sean is the cousin of one of our own SWR student-athletes, Tyler Hughes. Tyler plays on our SWR lacrosse team and has rallied the team behind his cousin. Sean has a very rare, aggressive cancer, lymphoblastic lymphoma. He undergoes chemotherapy several times a week travels to the city regularly for treatments and hospital stays. Sean will need two more full months of aggressive treatments and then two years of maintenance treatments. Sean’s little brother, as well faces his own health challenges, as he has been diagnosed with diabetes. Mrs. Hughes said that Sean and his little brother handle their challenges like real champs. Sean loves to playing basketball and riding his bike. He enjoys building with legos and loves the teenage mutant ninja turtles! More than anything, Sean wants to be a gold miner in Alaska when he grows up. His favorite show is Gold Rush! Just like Zachary, Sean too is very excited to be one of our Honored Guests for Lax Out Cancer this year! And we are thrilled to have them. They will walk alongside their new big buddies, the SWR and Miller Place Varsity Lacrosse Teams to a song that we have come to learn just happens to be very special to Sean and his family, ‘Wont Let Go’, by Rascal Flatts…. “I will stand by you, I will help you through, when you’ve done all you can do, and you can’t cope…I will dry your eyes, I will fight your fight, I will hold you tight and I won’t let go… The Shoreham Wading River community has announced its seventh Annual Lax Out Cancer games. This year’s event will match the Boys Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats with the Miller Place Panthers. The fundraising drive will be capped off on April 11 th as the Varsity and JV Boys squads from both schools will play games. True Value in Miller Place is donating 8 aprons. Blond Restaurant in Miller place took out an ad and studio E gave gift card! After careful consideration and discussion with nurses, social workers and family members, volunteers have decided that the following children will be the recipients of collected 'Lax Out Cancer' funds:
Each of these children have been diagnosed with cancer and their illnesses are aggressive. These families are also in severe financial need. It was remarked that people are not sure how one particular family puts food on their table each day. Many of these children have experienced relapses, multiple surgeries, and travel several times a week to NYC. It is more important than EVER to get out and continue to raise money. Each of these children's stories are so touching. They really need our help! Please stop for five minutes and reach out to someone, walk over to the neighbor's house, phone a friend....spread the word. |
